Back in college, Kevin DeKimpe wrote to me about this song in an email, describing it as a rant on substance abuse as a result of insecurity at college parties.
As I was listening to the song, I found myself amused by the fact that he had used auto-tune on his voice despite the fact that he’s such a great singer. Around the same time, the T-Pain app for iPhone had just come out and I was playing around with it a lot.
The call-and-response nature of the chorus gave me the idea that maybe auto-tune could be a metaphor for substance abuse. The shoot was a blast, and we got the entire University of Michigan theater department to come to my friend’s basement, turn their iPhone into a giant bong, and snort out of it for our viewing pleasure.
